in On Big Government,On Economics,On the War on Drugs

In the past two days, I have come across a few videos that provide some excellent and cogent commentary on issues of import.

In the first, Jeff Miron and Mary O’Grady crystallize the problem with the “war” on drugs. It is interesting to note that many people who are pro-WOD are pro-WOT (“war” on terror), yet it is clear the one funds the other. Drug money, without question, funds terrorist organizations.

In the second, Steve Wynn eloquently explains  how the health care legislation and bailouts will have the exact opposite effect from what their sponsors in Congress intend.

Again, politicians are not evil, they truly intend to try to help, but the do not understand basic economics.

from “Killing Pablo” by Mark Bowden
“Killing Pablo would not end cocaine exports to the United States or even slow them down–everybody knew that….”
“Killing Pablo had not ended the cocaine industry; it had merely handed it off to new leaders…..”
“All in all, there was more cocaine available for sale in the United States at cheaper prices that year than ever before in history. Indeed, throughout the remainder of the decade, cocaine prices in the United States gradually declined. The bottom line was that regardless of the billions spent in the war on drugs, there was more than enough cocaine for everybody in America who wanted to buy it.”

When I was a kid Macau was known as the birthplace of Black Cat fireworks. A few years later and they’re home to resorts. Amazing what even moderate liberty can do for an economy.
